It’s much, much worse in Michigan than we even realized
Last night, Rachel Maddow broke a huge story that has been happening since Republicans took over in Michigan in 2011 and has gone completely under the radar. Since January 2011, 566 bills have been signed into law. Of those, 546 of them, 96.5% were passed under “immediate effect”. Click through for the video from last night’s show. Pay particular attention to around 12:30 where they show it in action. It’s astonishing.
but, but, but, DEMOCRACY
The republicans in Michigan have a super majority. Michigan’s senate, house and governor all republican or have a republican majority. They are using an emergency provision to pass nearly all their laws.
Republicans used this emergency provision to:
- strip health benefits for same-sex couples,
- stop one of Michigan’s largest union from expanding,
- give an unelected manager the power to fire elected official, sell the towns assets, move to dissolve the town, cancel contracts, run the Detroit school district and the Highland Park school district. THIS ONE PERSON HAS UNILATERAL CONTROL, MUCH LIKE A DICTATORSHIP!
If that wasn’t enough, THE REPUBLICANS ARE FORGING RECORDS so they can pass laws immediately without a 2/3rd majority.
This is not a democracy, this is proof of EXTREME corruption in the state of Michigan.

This is Koko. She was a gorilla who astoundingly enough understood and could use American sign language. She used sign language to ask her trainer for a cat. She was fond of cats, and her first kitten was a tailless grey cat who she named All Ball. She was a gentle mother and treated All Ball like her own baby.
Unfortunately, All Ball escaped the gorilla cage and was hit by a car.
Koko’s trainer told her what had happened. When asked if she wanted to talk about her cat, Koko signed “Cry.” When asked what happened to her kitty Koko signed “Sleep cat.”
When shown a picture of a kitten that looked like All Ball, Koko signed “Cry, sad, frown.”
When Koko was left alone, people could hear whimpers from her cage.
This is one of the few things that can make me start to bawl…
As girls come of age sexually, the culture gives them impossibly contradictory messages…. Somehow girls are supposed to be innocent and seductive, virginal and experienced, all at the same time. As they quickly learn, this is tricky. Females have long been divided into virgins and whores, of course. What is new is that girls are now supposed to embody both within themselves. This is symbolic of the central contradiction of the culture—we must work hard and produce and achieve success and yet, at the same time, we are encouraged to live impulsively, spend a lot of money, and be constantly and immediately gratified. This tension is reflected in our attitudes toward many things, including sex and eating. Girls are promised fulfillment both through being thin and through eating rich foods, just as they are promised fulfillment through being innocent and virginal and through wild and impulsive sex…. The emphasis for girls and women is always on being desirable, not on experiencing desire…. advertisers can’t conceive of a kind of power that isn’t manipulative and exploitive or a way that women can be actively sexual without being like traditional men…. A young woman seems to have only two choices: She can bury her sexual self, be a ‘good girl,’ give in to what Carol Gilligan terms ‘the tyranny of nice and kind’ (and numb the pain by overeating or starving or cutting herself or drinking heavily). Or she can become a rebel—flaunt her sexuality, seduce inappropriate partners, smoke, drink flamboyantly, use other drugs. Both of these responses are self-destructive, but they begin as an attempt to survive, not to self-destruct.
